What Is a Bamboo Pillow?

I feel like there’s some confusion out there about what a bamboo pillow actually is. A bamboo pillow is a memory foam pillow with a cover made of bamboo fabric. In many cases, but not all, the memory foam is shredded to help make the pillow easier to adjust to your sleeping style, as well as allowing better airflow to keep the pillow cooler. You should look to make sure the bamboo fabric cover is 100% viscose bamboo (sometimes called 100% rayon from bamboo). (You can check out our article on sheets if you’d like to know what viscose bamboo is.)

There are two main reasons these are so popular. First, the memory foam core is really comfortable! Many people find it takes a bit of getting used to, but once they do they are able to adjust the pillow to accommodate their sleeping position, and provide optimal neck support. Second, the bamboo pillow cover is made from bamboo fabric. There’s some debate, but many people find this fabric sleeps cooler than other options. Most of us definitely appreciate a cooler pillow!

Are Bamboo Pillows Good?

Well, I run a blog called BestBambooGuide, so I obviously think so! Seriously, I find sleeping with a bamboo pillow far more comfortable than traditional options. It’s cooler and supports my head and neck. I never wake up with breathing problems or soreness. Those are the two main things I’m looking for in a pillow!

You should check it out for yourself though. The table below lists all of the bamboo pillows we’ve tested out and our ratings. Further below you can find more info on advantages and care of your pillow.

    • Hi Georgie,

Yes, you can definitely use a case on your pillow. Surprisingly enough, I’d recommend using a bamboo pillow case! No point in having a bamboo pillow and then using a cotton pillow case on it. The best place to find bamboo pillow cases in from the people how manufacture bamboo sheets. Check out our sheets reviews page for info on all of the best bamboo sheet manufacturers around. Most of those places will sell a set of two pillowcases separately from the sheet sets. I know for sure that Cariloha and Bamboo Supply Co do that… probably the others do also, but I haven’t tried it out.

    • Jason says:

Some of the reviews I saw on Amazon said you could put a case on there no problem. You can also get bamboo pillow cases rather than just relying on the cover that the bamboo pillow ships with.

  1. Kayla says:

I tried four different bamboo pillows and finally fell in love with the one from Coop Home Goods. This one looked a little different as far as the color of the case – it seems all of the pillows here and elsewhere have the same white and green print case bit this one came with a white cover with some small bamboo imprint. I love it and the price was reasonable. I should have looked at your list of the best bamboo pillow reviews earlier since it was the top rated choice!

    • Kalobe says:

I bought the Coop Home Goods one as well! I got it from Amazon, and was really happy with it. Even though it wasn’t eligible for Amazon prime, it shipped out the same day. Love them!

    • Ha! Glad everyone is liking the Coop home goods pillow. There’s a reason I have it as the top choice! I wish I could convince everyone to go with this choice, but people still get the Clara Clark pillow or the Miracle Bamboo Pillow which aren’t nearly as good. They are a bit cheaper, but I figure if your sleeping on something 8 hours a night for the next several years, it’s better to pay the extra $25-$30 (so, I don’t know, $.01 per day?) for something awesome. Anyway, glad people are liking the bamboo pillow reviews on here and are actually taking the advice!
